Medicine is the art and science of collecting,combining, compounding, preparing, preserving and standardising drugs and medicines from natural and synthetic sources. It also include dispensing medicines.In ‘A Compound of the Principles of Homeopathy’ by Dr. W.M. Boericke, pharmacyis, ‘The art of preparing drugs for use, and dispensing them as medicines’.The word ‘pharmacy’ also implies the place where medicines are made and distributed.
HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE
It is an art and science of collecting,compounding, combining, preparing, preserving and standardising drugs and medicines from vegetable, animal, mineral kingdoms and certain physiological substances and morbid substances,according to homeopathic principles (as given in the Organon of Medicine, Materia Medica Pura and Chronic Diseases), and also dispensing medicines according to the prescriptions of the homeopathic physicians.

Homoeopathic Pharmacy Includes
•Collection: Gathering or procuring therequired drug substances.
•Identification:Ascertaining the genuinenessand purity of the drug substance. It is doneby macroscopical, microscopical andchemical studies.
•Qualitative Analysis: The process ofascertaining the presence or absence ofcertain substances in a sample; whatimpurities are present or confirming theabsence of certain impurities, etc.
•Quantitative Analysis: Having ascertainedthe nature of the constituents of a givensample, the process of determining howmuch of each component, or of specifiedcomponents, is present is quantitativeanalysis.
•Preserving: Drug substances have to be keptfrom destruction of their medicinal powers.
•Standardising: Medicines prepared should conform to the official homeopathic pharmacopoeia or any other authoritative textso as to maintain a uniformity in thepreparation of medicines.
•Combining: Act of uniting two or more substances physically (mixtures) or chemically (compounds).
•Compounding: Act of uniting two or moreelements in fixed proportion to form analtogether new product. This new productwill have properties different from those ofconstituents. Calcarea sulph., Magnesiummur., Natrium ars., etc. are all compounds.
Note: Combining and compounding is advocated priorto potentization and proving. Law of simplex isconcerned with drug proving and drugadministration in sick.
•Quality Control During Preparation: Mothertincture, mother solution, mother substanceand their potencies are prepared accordingto the old method (Hahnemann’s method) andthe new method (Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of U.S.A.)
•Quality Control: It is to ensure that drug substances and other preparations containessential compounds within a pre-determine dranage of composition and the impurities do not exceed certain specified limits.
•Dispensing: It means preparing and serving the medicinal preparation as per the directionof a physician.
